Shreyas Iyer, India’s ODI vice-captain, sustained an injury to his left rib cage during the third and final ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground today.
The injury occurred in the 34th over of Australia’s innings when Iyer, fielding at backward point, sprinted back and dived full-length to take a stunning catch dismissing Alex Carey off Harshit Rana’s bowling. He landed awkwardly, clutching his left side in visible pain, which caused a brief delay in play.
The Indian physio on the field attended to Shreyas Iyer, but was unable to continue fielding. He was assisted off the ground and replaced by substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel. He did not return for the rest of Australia’s innings. He was unavailable to bat in India’s chase; however, India won comfortably without losing 2nd wicket, powered by Rohit Sharma’s century (121) and Virat Kohli’s fifty (74).

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement on social media: “Shreyas Iyer sustained an injury to his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for further evaluation and assessment of his injury.” This was posted shortly after the incident.
