India vs West Indies: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a 15-man squad for the upcoming home Test series against West Indies, which will be played starting October 2 in Ahmedabad and end with the second Test in New Delhi from October 10-14. This will be Shubman Gill’s maiden Test series as captain on Indian soil, having led India to a 2-2 draw in England earlier this year. Considering that Rishabh Pant is still unavailable for the first match due to his toe injury, Gill will have an experienced all-rounder in Ravindra Jadeja as his deputy.
A few youngsters have been retained in the mix. Dhruv Jurel and Narayan Jagadeesan have been entrusted with the responsibility of wicketkeeping in Pant’s absence. World No. 1 bowler Jasprit Bumrah bolsters the pace attack with Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna. A consistent file is Jaiswal and KL Rahul, with Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal contributing in a big way. Shreyas Iyer, meanwhile, remains unavailable as he steps back from red-ball cricket for a while, and players such as Karun Nair and Shardul Thakur have also been left out as the team seeks to sharpen its long-format focus.
It is a significant series for India, in the context of their quest in the World Test Championship. India is placed third in the WTC table with 46.67 percent wins, and the West Indies are sixth after a tough start. A strong showing at home will enhance India’s chances of making the WTC final, and the visitors would be keen to register their first points in the current cycle. Cricket will be good to watch, and the two sides will play hard cricket.
