South Africa have picked their squads for the upcoming tour of Pakistan and the most important return is that of Quinton de Kock to One-Day Internationals. The seasoned wicket-keeper batter announced retirement from ODIs after the 2023 World Cup, but has come out of it just a couple of years later. His return brings a lot of strength into the batting line-up as South Africa thought ahead to an extended all-format tour though not until October 2025.
Regular skipper, Temba Bavuma is injured and will not be able to play this series so as a result the team has named different captains for each format in order to spread the load, and develop more leaders. South Africa will also kick off Mace defence here when they clash with Pakistan in two Tests, the first from October 12-16 at Lahore and the second from October 20-24 at Rawalpindi.
Three Captains and a Strong Squad:
In the absence of Bavuma, Aiden Markram will bring experience and a calm presence as Test captain. Matthew Breetzke will have his first chance to captain the ODI team while David Miller will lead the T20 squad. Also, Donovan Ferreira will lead U-19 XI for the one-off T20 against Namibia on October 11 in Windhoek. De Kock, 32, is selected for both the ODI and T20 squads in his first involvement in 50-over cricket since retirement.
Renowned for his classic stroke play, he has tallied in excess of 6,700 ODI runs with 21 centuries – one of South Africa’s most accomplished one-day batters. The squads have a good balance of senior players and young talent and are indicative of South Africa’s intent to remain competitive across formats while looking to blooding the next generation. This bold strategy of multiple captains might become a new trend in international cricket if it brings home success in what is expected to be tough Pakistan series.
