India will be without wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant for the crucial two-match home Test series against the West Indies, starting October 2 in Ahmedabad. Pant, who fractured his left foot during the England series, is still undergoing recovery and rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. His absence leaves a significant gap in the side, especially after serving as vice-captain during India’s recent tour of England.
Rishabh Pant Ruled Out
The selection committee, headed by Ajit Agarkar, will meet on September 24 to finalise the squad. A trimmed 15-member group is expected this time, unlike the broader squad picked for the New Zealand Tests last year. With Pant almost certain to miss the series, the selectors will have to rethink their wicketkeeping options and strengthen the squad’s balance, particularly in the batting department.
Dhruv Jurel is currently the frontrunner to take over the gloves. His work behind the stumps in the last two Tests against England impressed the team management, and he appears ready for a longer run. Another name in contention is N. Jagadeesan, who has opened the batting and kept wickets for India A in the recent warm-up matches against Australia A. His versatility could make him a useful backup option.
Young batters in contention
The selectors are also keeping an eye on Devdutt Padikkal and Nitish Kumar Reddy. Padikkal made a strong case with a commanding 150 for India A against Australia A, while Reddy remains in the conversation despite a minor knee issue. Both youngsters offer fresh energy, and with this series carrying World Test Championship points, India — currently third on the table — may look to broaden their options. West Indies, meanwhile, are placed sixth.
