From European Cup to Champions League
Until 1992 the competition was known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup, established in 1955/56. As it was a pure knockout competition, so the teams played less games in each season.
Real Madrid triumphed in the inaugural edition, having to contest just seven matches to win the trophy. In comparison Real Madrid had to play 13 matches en route to the 2023/24 Champions League title. The additional games in the current format also give today’s players more scoring opportunities.
European Cup: The First Great Goal-Scorers
The European Cup, officially the European champion clubs cup, began in 1955 as UEFA’s first major men’s club tournament.
Real Madrid dominated the early years and won the first five titles in a row. Argentinian-born forward Alfredo Di Stéfano became the competition’s first true star. He scored 49 goals, a record that stood for 37 seasons until the tournament became the Champions League.Portuguese legend Eusebio came closest to that mark. He netted 47 goals while leading Benfica to replace Madrid as Europe’s most feared side for a time.
Then came Gerd Muller of Bayern München in the 1970s. He struck 34 goals in only 35 matches, an incredible rate of 0.97 goals per game. For decades, no player with at least 20 appearances matched that efficiency until Erling Haaland arrived.

Lionel Messi: The One-Club Legend
Lionel Messi is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in the total number of Champions League goals overall, but he has records that nobody can match. He scored 120 Champions League goals while playing for Barcelona, the most by anyone at a single club, and more than Ronaldo’s next-closest 105 for Real Madrid.
He scored in 18 consecutive Champions League tournaments. He scored in 16 consecutive seasons for one club. Both of those are all-time records.
He joined Barcelona when he was just 13 years old and stayed with the club for 20 years. In that time, he won four Champions League trophies, ten La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey crowns,
and three UEFA Super Cups.Messi was the second player ever to score 100 goals in the Champions League and was the top (or joint-top) scorer in six different seasons, which is just one fewer than Ronaldo.
