Indian T20 International Cricket Team New Captain 2026

Team India has decided to drop World Cup-winning player and captain Suryakumar Yadav from the squad. Surya’s advancing age and his poor performance in IPL 2026 are the primary reasons behind this decision. Keeping the upcoming Olympics and the 2028 T20 World Cup in mind, the Indian cricket board now wants to appoint a new captain to build a team for the future.

Currently, Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is the front-runner to become the next T20 captain, though players like Sanju Samson and Tilak Varma are also in the race. Although Shreyas Iyer played a few good knocks in IPL 2026, he failed to lead his team, Punjab Kings, into the playoffs. Additionally, Rajat Patidar and Vaibhav Suryavanshi are also set to be inducted into the team.

1. Shreyas Iyer (Punjab Kings)

The front-runner for India’s T20I captaincy. He was acquired by PBKS for INR 26.75 Crore in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. He had a strong season with the bat, though his team missed the playoffs.

2. Sanju Samson (Chennai Super Kings)

CSK wicketkeeper-batsman (traded from Rajasthan Royals before the 2026 season). He is in the captaincy candidate mix due to his extensive experience leading the Rajasthan Royals to their most successful era.

Note: Samson did not captain in IPL 2026 as he played under CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad.

3. Tilak Varma (Mumbai Indians)

The young T20 middle-order player who remains a prospective candidate for future leadership roles.

4. Rajat Patidar (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)

Set to be inducted into the T20I team. He has established an outstanding tactical reputation by captaining RCB to back-to-back IPL titles in 2025 and 2026.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi (Rajasthan Royals)

The 15-year-old batting prodigy. Acquired for INR 1.1 Crore by RR, he became the youngest player in IPL history and won the Orange Cap in 2026 with a record-shattering strike rate of 237.31.
